Why not Wymott? – RSA Chase Preview

There’s a great each way betting shape to the RSA Chase with Time For Rupert heading the market at 5/2 and the next best Jessies Dream and Wymott on 12/1. We’ve missed the 14/1 offered by totesport on the latter by a few hours but the 12/1 available generally is a fair price. Several bookies have cut the price to 10/1 today.

Wymott is a progressive well built horse with good form – the form of his chases has worked out well – and he looks like a horse that will improve dramatically for a step up in trip, which is what he’ll get in the RSA Chase over 3 miles 110 yards. What I really like about Donald McCain’s horse is his jumping which for a novice it outstanding. Yes, he made a couple of mistakes at Bangor but that was probably due to him leading before he wanted to. Overall he’s a great ‘lepper’ as they say in Ireland. This will be a vital weapon for him in the gruelling test that is the RSA Chase.

Another positive characteristic is the way he responds to pressure. At the end of each of his chase wins and indeed his win over hurdles at Haydock he has to be kept up to his task but each time grinds out a win. Over fences he is unbeaten so like his stablemate Peddlers Cross, who also heads to Cheltenham with a good chance, we just don’t know how good he is. His racing style suggests that a fast run race gruelling race, which the RSA invariably is, will suit him admirably.

The favourite, Time For Rupert has a great chance in the RSA Chase as he also appears to have all the attributes to win and is a real non-nonsense classy horse. However, Wymott fits the stats better as no horse has ever won the RSA Chase if they hadn’t raced the same year and in the last 20 yeares only Lord Noelie has won after completing 2 seasons over hurdles.

There are plenty of other likely types including Jessies Dream, the representative of the Irish who took the races last year with Weapons Amnesty.

Overall though Wymott has a great chance is being aimed at the race and is a value bet at 12/1.
