A couple of close calls for us yesterday, even if sadly no winners, but we go on again in good form and we did get good each/way returns from the two big races at Leopardstown.

In the Pigsback.com Maiden Hurdle (12.50) it will be exciting for many people to see Ballyward after a year given how he knuckled down to win his bumper here, but he will do well to top Someday, whose second behind high class prospect Next Destination is working out really well (Paloma Blue third, since won here on Tuesday), and he would have gone close had he stayed up when moving menacingly into affairs at Fairyhouse at the beginning of the month.

All eyes will be on Faugheen, who ought to win the Ryanair Hurdle (2.30) with his head in his chest following his comeback when he put the opposition to the sword in the Morgiana Hurdle. Stablemate Cliaos Emery and Campeador should fight it out for second and Mick Jazz and The Game Changer can get some place money.

Advice: 12.50 Leopardstown – 1 pt win Someday (11/4 Bet365, Coral)

The Neville Hotels Novice Chase (1.55) is perhaps the best contested chase on the card, so it says a lot about the reputation of Monalee that he goes off such a short price to take his first Grade 1 on just his second chasing start. That price has been earned with good reason though, as he was brilliant when taking control of affairs early at Punchestown, beating the very solid yardstick Any Second Now by a comfortable six lengths. The runner up has since finished second to Invitation Only, whilst third Sutton Manor has gotten off the mark since. Based on his hurdling form, Monalee ought to thrive for stepping up to 3 miles and he should take the beating today.

Rathvinden has been rejuvenated for going over fences with two taking wins before a fine second to Death Duty in the Drinmore (Dinaria Des Obeaux fourth). The rain that has fallen overnight will suit him down to the ground and he is a serious each/way player along with Jury Duty, who was breathtaking when knuckling down to get the better of the good mare Shattered Love (a ten length winner since at Cork) in the Florida Pearl Novice Chase. He had been under the pump from an early stage, but he found more to get the better of his stable companion and the pair left the subsequent Porterstown Handicap Chase winner Presenting Percy 12 lengths behind. Going up in trip again will only help him and he looks to have a solid each/way chance here.

The other to note is Bon Papa, who didn’t go on from his impressive hurdle win last season but was always set to make a chaser, and he did well to win on his chase debut over 2 miles at Punchestown. He’s seriously unexposed and has lots to offer.

My original tips Mossback is now an non-runner.
